as we are (Heb. 4:14–5:10). He was buried in a tomb (Matt. 27:57–66; Mark 15:43–47; Luke 23:50–56; John 19:38–42). All this was “for us and our salvation,” as the Niceno-Constantinopolitan creed puts it. God alone is the Savior, and it is futile to rely on man (Ps. 146:1ff.). Yet God alone could not save us! This startling reality is affirmed by Heidelberg Catechism 16; since God is just, man’s sin required atonement by man: “the same human nature which has sinned should make satisfaction for sin.”
